Karna VS Arjuna Final War

The Seventeenth day of the war came. Duryodhana went to Salya and with folded hands made his request. He said, `Karna is going to kill Arjuna today but only flaw in his plan is, there is no charioteer in the world like Krishna. You are the only one who can equal or even excel the prowess of Krishna. Karna is sure to kill Arjuna, if only you could be kind enough to be his charioteer.` Initially Salya was furious. He said, `How dare you suggest that I a Kshatriya do the work of a Sutaputra for a sutaputra? I am great king. I wear a crown. I have been given the sacred coronation bath. I am a Maharathi. You are asking me to become a servant of a low-born? Despite your over confidence in him, he is no match to me. I can easily defeat him. I can fight Indra and defeat him. Do not insult me. I shall go back to my kingdom.`

Duryodhana again spoke with tears in his eyes. `My lord, who can dare to insult you? Who does not know your superiority? My request is only that since no one can match Krishna`s skill in charioteering except your honoured self. Most humbly we request you to guide the course of Karna`s chariot. So that he may kill Arjuna. It is like lord Brahma taking the reins of the chariot of Shiva when he went to kill Triparas.` Now, Salya was pleased with the humulity of Duryodhana. He said, `I am pleased to hear you say in the midst of all the army, That I am superior to Krishna. I will accept to become the charioteer of Karna.` Duryodhana fell at his feet to express his gratitude.

Karna too, was humilated to know that Salya had agreed to become his charioteer. He expressed his gratitude to Salya. He was pleased with Karnas. Salya went and prepared a chariot for Karna and brought it before him. Karna did pradakshina of his chariot and then saluted his father the sun. He made Salya enter the chariot first and they he followed him. Duryodhana gave him a fond farewell. Karna said that it is Arjuna or me, who would die in the battle. Salya had made a promise to Yudhisthira to dampen the enthusiasm of Karna to break his morals. He had been praising the Pandavas all they way and belittling Karna. Karna only said. `My lord, I do not wish to displease you by contradicting what you say.`

Karna had arranged his army beautifully today. Krishna said, `Arjuna today you must face Karna and kill him. Bhima has to kill Duryodhana.` The fight started in all its fury. Karna was decided for a fight to death. He wanted to put up the best possible show of his skills and prowess. Arjuna advanced alone. He saw that his sons Sushama, Satyasena and Vrishasena protected the chariot of Karna. The Pandavas who were ranged against Karna were, Satyaki, Dhristadhymna, Bhima, Shikhandi, sons of Draupadi, Nakula and Sahdeva. But they could not check the progress of Karna. Bhima killed Satyasena. The other two sons of Karna were wounded. The army of the Pandavas was no match to Karna today. It just blew away like clouds in a gale.

Yudhisthira came to face him. A great fight took place. Karna was hurt in the beginning but he fought back routing Satyaki and others who came to help Yudhisthira. He cut the bow of Yudhisthira to pieces. He also smashed the chariot of Yudhisthira. Then with an arrow he broke his armour too. Now Yudhisthira was standing there helpless at his mercy. Yudhisthira threw a few javeline at him but they all were broken into pieces. Then Karna touched him with his bow and said, You are one of the noblest of men born a Kshatriya but more a Brahmin by heart. Do not challenge your superiors. As you rightly said that I a sutaputra should not vie with the Kshatriya, my lord you, too have failed to act as a Kshatriya. Go to Arjuna you can never defeat me in a single combat. He then turned to the other side of the field.

Bhima was very angry at the insult offered to Yudhisthira. He advanced menacingly towards, Karna, Salya warned Karna about him. Bhima rushed at Karna and was able to hurt him so badly that he fainted. He came around soon and began fighting again. Arjuna defeated Ashvatthama in a duel. Yudhisthira again came to face Karna but was taken to his tent badly hurt. Arjuna and Krishna went to his tent to know about his welfare. Thereafter, Arjuna and Krishna re-entered the field and their horses were refreshed.

Arjuna asked Krishna to take him to Karna.Krishna took him to Karna. Salya saw the chariot of Arjuna coming towards Karna. By now Salya was very deeply impressed by the bravery, heroism and generosity of Karna. He had already stopped praising the Pandavas and denouncing Karna. He could see that there was no one in the battlefield that could match the sterling qualities of Karna. He was very much overwhelmed by Karna`s devotion to his duty and to his king.

He said Karna now the time has come to fulfill your promise to kill Arjuna. He is killing our army in hundreds and thousands, kill him. Then the Pandavas will lose the war. He further said, I know the prowess of Bhishma and Drona and I am no mean warrior myself. But no one can stand up to you. Only you can kill Arjuna. Karna`s eyes were filled with tears of gratitude, hearing the words of Salya. He said, my lord, you have made me the happiest person in the world. I feel very honoured and I shall try my best to live upto your expectations. You are my lord, master and friend with your blessings. I hope to kill Arjuna, kindly take me to meet him half way.

The chariot of Karna was stopped by Bhima and Satyaki. Satyaki killed Sushama, the son of Karna. Karna killed the son of Dhistadhyumna. Now Shikhandi, Janmejaya, Yudhamanyu, Uttamaujas and Dhritadhymna, five great warriors were fighting Karna. He defeated all of them and they all fled away from him. Duryodhana came to help him with his brother Dussasan. Bhima and Dussasan met and a terrible duel was fought. Both hated each other that put extra sharpness in their fight. Bhima said, `Dussasan I am grateful to you, Today by coming to fight with me. You have given me an opportunity to repay a debt.

I remember, your evil hands touched the blessed hair of Draupadi. Ever since, I think of your misdeed,I always wanted to repay you.` Bhima fought a long drawn duel with Dussasan. Finally he was able to smash his chariot and break his bow. Now Dussasan was fallen on the ground. Bhima caught him by his throat. Then he threw him on the ground. He cut his hands and threw them on the ground. He had promised to Draupadi that the evil hands, which touched her, would fall on the ground. Bhima ripped the chest of Dussasan. The blood from his heart spurted. Bhima put his lips to it. This terrible deed was performed by Bhima to fulfill his oath. The brother of Duryodhana, Dussasan was dead.

Vrishasena, the son of Karna, advanced towards the Pandavas army. The sharp arrows of Arjuna killed him while Karna was looking. Now, Karna was eager to fight Arjuna. The two greatest warriors were facing each other.

Their duel began, they started with the ordinary arrows, then warned up to the use of divine astras. They used astras of Agni, Varuna, Indra in turn and neutralized the astras of the other. Now, Karna, sent a terrible astra, a special gift of his guru, Parashurama, called Bhargavastra. This astra was more powerful than all the astras used so far by them. The army of the Pandavas was much harassed by this astra. Bhima was furious he told Arjuna to put an end to Karna otherwise he would kill him with his mace. Krishna asked Arjuna to go all out, otherwise, it would not be easy to kill Karna.

Arjuna invoked Brahmastra, Great upheavals took place in all the directions. It cleared the cloud of arrows created by Karna Now Karna sent another deadly astra. The astra illuminated the entire field. It went like lightening. Everyone was watching with bated breath. Even Devas like Surya and Indra had been watching the duel between the two.

Krishna did an unusual thing. He pressed his chariot and it sank six inches into the ground. As a result the astra aimed at Arjuna`s neck could hit his crown only. The famed Kiriti fell down on the ground but Arjuna remained unharmed. Now there was no astra as powerful in Karna`s arsenal. But he continued his fighting. The Pandavas could breath easier after they saw that Arjuna escaped from the dreadful Magastra.

Now the fate has started its work against Karna. The earth became soft all of sudden and the wheels of Karna`s chariot went deep in to the ground. The protectors of his wheels had run away already. Karna was getting furious. Then Arjuna sent Aindrastra at him. Karna could invoke Brahmastra to counter it with great efforts of will. Now his memory was failing and he had lost the power to invoke astras by saying appropriate incantations.

Karna pleaded with Arjuna that he could give him time to retrieve the wheels of his chariots. That was the rule of the righteous war. Krishna laughed and said, `talk of righteousness does not behove you. You have been the part of evil Duryodhana`s all sinful schemes, you never protested against the insulting treatment given to Draupadi in their court, rather you were a party to aggravate it by your insulting remarks. You cannot forget the recent killing of Abhimanyu. Do you think that was righteous. You talk of righteousness, I cannot check my laughter.`

Krishna`s words hurt Karna deeply. He knew the words of Krishna were true. Yet he went to retrieve the wheels of his chariot from the ground. But Arjuna`s arrows rained incessantly. He came up again and resumed fighting. Arjuna sent Agni, Varuna and Vayu astras. Now Karna was finding it difficult to remember incantations to invoke appropriate astras to make these ineffective. Yet Karna could not be hurt seriously. Again he was trying to retrieve the wheels of his chariot from the ground. Krishna prompted Arjuna to make haste. Karna should be killed without any loss of time. Arjuna sent an arrow, which was like Vajr, the weapon of Indra. It cut the head of Karna

  1. Given the whole storyline it is difficult to say what was dharma and what as adharma?

How can Dhyut staking wife and brothers, killing innocent women and kids or a weaponless warrior or use of deceit to kill aged grand-dad and teacher etc. be called dharma?

  2. Only a fool would indulge in a debate of “who was better”. In Mahabharata, the grandeurs and the low-points of every character has been carefully laid out. The only debate is of dharma vs adharma. Karna wilfully participated in Adharma and paid the price. It doesn’t matter how good a warrior he was.

  3. HI ARJUNA FANS FIRST I WOULD LIKE INFORM YOU ABOUT WHEN KARNA WITH KAVACHA KUNDALA NOBODY CAN WOUND HIM WHAT U KNOW ABOUT VIRAT YUDH KARNA WOUNDED ARJUNA THEN ONLY ARJUNA USED MOHINI ASHTRA AND KARNA JUST ESCAPED FROM WAR ZONE DUEN TO NOT TO AFFECT FROM MOHINI ASHTRA. AFTER VIRAT YUDH THEN ONLY INDHRA PLANNED TO GET KARNA’S KAVACHA KUNDALA FOR SAVE ARJUNA LIFE. MOREOVER EVEN WITHOUT KAVACHA KUNDALA ALSO HE IS SUPERIOR THAN ARJUNA.

    1. Vijay think about if Arjun also had Kavach.
I know karna was a great worrior, but not greater than arjun in any sense . Arjun deafeted karna many time before including virat yudha when all kaurav including Bhisma and Drona were also in that battle. Do not forget that Arjun was incarnation of Nar and Krishna is Narayan. So how can we say that karna is supirior than Parth(Arjun)

      1. Hey Gaurav (Kotian ? right )…. Where had you been from so many days & why dont you visit the “Greatest Warrior of All Time” blog ??

      2. Mr. Gaurav you are telling Arjuna defeated all kauravas single handedly in virat war, then why Indhra took kavacha kundala from Karna. if he capable to defeat single handly when he seek krishna’s help, if he capable to defeat Pitha Bishma why he bring sikhandi infront of bhishma, if he capable to defeat dhrona why he participate to kill him with lies, if he capable to defeat karna why he put arrow when he was trying to take chariot from swallow. I also know that Arjuna is good archer but he cannot match with Bhishma, dhrona and karna.

        1. For Kavach question you need to read Nara and Narayana story. Any one who would break the kavach would die as per the boon given by Suryadev. Nara or say Arjuna had the capacity to destroy that kavach as Nara and Narayana had already destroyed 999 kavach in the previous incarnation. You can not separate Krishna and Arjuna. Now if you read Mahabharata carefully Arjuna was supposed to fire Pashupatastra and at that moment Karna jumped of from the ratha to buy time. Lord knew about his tactic and so Lord ordered Arjuna to kill Karna in that position after making Karna realize about his adharma”s.

  5. Dear All ,Karna’s previous Birth was as an asura named “Sahasra – Kavacha(1000 kavachas)” he tormanted all the living being .His 999 kavachas were broken by Nar- Narayan .Fearing death he fled and hid under the shelter of Lord Surya .Later on he was born as Karna with the remaining one kavach , Nar – Narayan was born as Arjuna – Krishna .So eventually Karna has to be killed by Arjuna .More over Karna was defeated By Arjuna twice(battle of Virat and during chakra vyuh ) and also by Bhima and Satyaki.
Karna had to bear all his suffering due to his Karmas in previous Birth

    1. WELL
      IT’S NOT ABT PREVIOUS BIRTH
ARJUNA WAS DISGUISED AS EUNUCH IN VIRATA PARVA
HOW ONE FIGHT VALIANTLY WITH A PITIABLE ONE i.e,EUNUCH?
HE NEVER ACHEIVED ANY THING BY HIS OWN ACCEPT IT.
IF U DIS AGREE,THEN WHY DIDN’T HE WON OVER BABRUVAHANA BY HIS OWN.
IF U SAY IT IS A CURSE ,KARNA’S DEATH IS ALSO A CURSE NOT ARJUNA’S VALIANTNESS
THE ONLY THREE PEOPLE WHO INVITED THEIR DEATH ARE
      1.BHISHMA
      2.KARNA
      3.KRISHNA
      THEY HAVE GUTS FOR THAT
ARJUNA BECAME OLD AND DIED DUE TO VIRTUOUS OF PRIDE AND VANITY

Hearing these words, Karna, afflicted with the shafts of Arjuna’s son, once more said unto Drona, ‘Exceedingly afflicted with the shafts of Abhimanyu, I am staying in battle, only because (as a warrior) I should stay here. Indeed, the arrows of this south of great energy are exceedingly fierce. Terrible as they are and possessed of the energy of fire, these arrows are weakening my heart.’

what Lord Krishna think of karna’s bravery:

Krishna said(To Arjuna):.I swear by Truth to thee, O friend, that my limbs are burning at the thought that while the son of Subhadra was thus advancing, consuming the hostile army with his shafts, even on that occasion the wicked-souled Karna was engaged in acts of hostility to that hero,Unable, O Partha, to stay in that battle before Abhimanyu’s face, mangled with the shafts of Subhadra’s son, deprived of consciousness, and bathed in blood, Karna drew deep breaths, inflamed with rage. At last, afflicted with arrows, he was obliged to turn his back upon the field.

    http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m08/m08073.htm

& Finally karna himself accepting Arjuna’s supeority:

    Narrative:

“‘Karna said(about Arjuna), “As far as I have heard,
    such a superior car-warrior has
never been born on earth! Behold
my prowess, since I will contend in
battle with even that Partha who is
such. This prince of Kuru’s line, this
    foremost of car-warriors, careers in
battle, borne by his steeds white in
hue. Perhaps he will despatch me to
    Yama’s abode today. Know, however,
that with Karna’s death, these all
will be exterminated. The two arms
of this prince are never covered with
sweat. They never tremble. They are
    massive and covered with cicatrices.
Firm in the use of weapons, he is
possessed of great skill and endued
    with great lightness of hands.
Indeed, there is no warrior equal to
the son of Pandu. He taketh a large
number of arrows and shooteth them
as if they were one. Quickly fixing
    them on the bow-string, he
propelleth them to the distance of
two miles. They always fall on the
foe. What warriors is there on earth
that is equal to him? That Atiratha,
    endued with great activity, with
Krishna as his ally, gratified the god
Agni at Khandava. There, on that
    occasion, the high-souled Krishna
    obtained his discus, and Savyasaci,
the son of Pandu, obtained his bow
    Gandiva. There that mighty-armed
one, endued with might that knows
no decay, also obtained his terrible
car unto which are yoked those white
steeds, as also his two great
    celestial and inexhaustible quivers,
    and many celestial weapons, from
the God of Fire. In the region of
    Indra he obtained his conch
    Devadatta and slew innumerable
Daityas, and all the Kalakeyas. Who
is there on earth that is superior to
him? Possessed of greatness of soul,
he gratified Mahadeva himself in fair
fight, and obtained from him the
    terrible and mighty weapon Pasupata
that is capable of destroying the
three worlds. The several Regents of
the world, united together gave him
    their weapons of immeasurable
energy, with which that lion among
    men quickly destroyed in battle
    those united Asuras, the
    Kalakhanjas.

    So also, in Virata’s city,
moving on a single car he
vanquished all of us, and snatched
from us that wealth of kine, and took
from all the foremost of car-warriors
    (portions of) their garments.
    Challenging that foremost of
Kshatriyas, that hero having him of
Vrishni’s race for his ally, that
warrior who is endued with such
energy and such attributes, I regard
myself, O Shalya, to be the foremost
of persons in all the world in point
of courage. He is, again, protected by
that Keshava of great energy, who i
Narayana himself and who is without
    a rival, that high-souled Vasudeva,
    that ever-victorious Vishnu armed
with conch, discus, and mace, whose
    attributes all the world united
    together, cannot (in narrating)
    exhaust in 10,000 years. Beholding
the two Krishnas together on the
same car, fear entereth my heart
together with courage. Partha is the
    foremost of all bowmen!

    OTHER MISCONCEPTIONS:

Misconception No 1-Indra made Karna weaker by requesting karna to offer his kavach kundal as alms(Daan):

About the kavach kundal of karna better get to know that even if shakuni or even blind dhritrashtra had that kavach kundal nobody not even demigods can penetrate his kavach..the fact ofthe matter is that having impenetrable kavach kundal makes karna invincible in battle & battle will become one sided so karna having deprived of his kavach kundal makes the battle equally challenging for both karna & arjuna & not one sided…So having kavacha kundal will definietly make you invincible in battle but wont show your archery talent! So having or not having kavach kundaal does’nt make you great archer & it simply weaken your defence & most important of all it doesn’t show your archery talent!!

Misconception No 2-Kunti saved Arjuna:Moreover I laugh at somebody claim that kunti saved arjuna even though karna only promised to kunti he would spare all 4 pandavas except Arjuna as Karna was determined to kill Arjuna even though knowing Arjuna was his younger uterine brother..On the other gand arjuna gandiva fell from his hand & he cried for fraticide he had done after karna death after kunti desclosed of karna reality as his elder brother to arjuna & after dat Arjuna developed great affection for karna last suviving son named Vrishaketu, & personally arjuna trained him & took utmost care of him.. This is Arjuna!!

Misconception No 3-Brahmin’s curse caused Karna’s defeat:

Now coming at somebody’s claim that brahmin curse for karna..Let me tell you Arjuna didnt gave him that shap so why you blame arjuna..it was his destiny that even Arjuna cant change..in gitaopdesh lord vasudev showed arjuna his vishwaroopam in which karna alongwith all kaurava commanders were engulfed by lord krishna bigg mouth which arjuna saw..everybody knew those on path of adharm are sure to get defeated & stop blaming arjuna for that!

Misconception No 4-Arjuna did Adharm by cheatfully killing Bhishma:

you all are wrong again mate…If you read mahabharata properly Shikhandi in her previous birth as Amba has a boon from lord Shiva that in her next birth as shikhandi, she will be the reason for Bhishma death & Krishna himeslf enginered Bhishma death by arranging Shikandi behind Arjuna after Bhishma himself told the way of his death to pandavas..so u all better stop blaiming Arjuna for that..this was lord shiva boon that was bound to happen.& according to u Arjuna causing Bhishma death was unjust..but dear it was again lord Shiva boon that Shikandi obtained in her previous birth & dats the truth which ur ego cant change! This was bound to happenn..& if you still call this as Adharm then better blame lord shiva & lord krishna both..argue with gods then..u can assume however whatever u want in ur own version of mahabharata written by urself!but in actual mb,sorry mate dis doesnt happen dude.. accept that!

Misconception No 5-Karna forgot Mantra due to Parshuram’s curse:

Now coming to your point dat karna forgot mantra for brahmastra invocation..better read the last part sec 90-91 of Karna Parva. It was CLEARLY mentioned that Karna after initial struggle karna was able to recall mantra for brahmastra which he invoked & directed at arjuna which was quenched by another Brahmastra fired by Arjuna..

Misconception No 6-Arjuna being the greatest archer cant defeat Drona & Drona has to be killed by Adharm:

First of all if you all read Mahabharat properly in Drona Parva you will get to know that Dronacharya has invoked a terrible weapon nullyfying divine system known as “BRAHMADANDA” also called the stick of Brahma..It wasn’t actually a weapon for offensive purpose but its for defence purposes only & it has the divine power of all 7 Saptarishis & it literally nullified all weapons of Pandavas..It has the power to nullify the Brahmastra also as once Brahmastra of Great Sage Vishwamitra was nullified by Brahmadanda only!!At last Lord Krishna adviced Pandavas the way which was indeed not dharmic to kill drona but remember Drona also was the chief responsible for Abhimanyu’s merciless cowardly killing by Adharm even though he was the only eldest & most respected person after Bhishma’s fall..So he has to receive back the fruit of his actions!

MAHADEV SHIV HIMSELF ACCEPTED ARJUNA SUPERIOTY WHEN LORD SHIVA FOUGHT A DUEL WITH ARJUNA IN HUNTER DISGUISE WHEN ARJUNA DID SEVERE PENANCE ON HIS TWO THUMBS OF HIS FOOT TO OBTAIN PASHUPATASTRA FROM LORD SHIVA..ARJUNA WAS CALLED NARA & HE WAS THE MOST IDEAL MAN HIMSELF & LORD KRISHNA HIMSELF ACCEPTED IN GITA PRAISING HIS MORAL CHARACTER!READ WHAT MAHADEV HAS TO SAY ABOUT ARJUNA..IF YOU WANT I CAN POST ENTIRE NARRATIVE!!

& EVEN IF FOR ANY REASON YOU WANT TO ARGUE WITH LORD SHIVA REGARDING ARJUNA PROWESS,THEN YOU ARE MOST WELCOME!!

karna himself praised arjuna that everytime he cut thread of bow arjuna in such a speed rejoin his thread that karna cant notice..this is clearly memtioned in karna parva..for god’s sake read carefully..Moreover Arjuna wasnt responsible for karna shaap so why do u blame arjuna..why dont you people dont notice how abhimanyu single handedly hold at bay 5 kaurava generals simultaneously including karna when he was chariotless!!

Moreover karna himself said to kunti(in ved vyas version) & to shalya ( in some telugu version) dat anybody except Mahadev Shiva would fear to fight arjuna wid krishna as his charioteer!

Arjuna didnt use the irrestible & unfailing “Pashupata Astra” on karna & neither Arjuna used the deadly “Brahmasirha astra” on karna because it will have caused unimmaginable destruction which Arjuna was against..Surely karna would have dispatched to yamaloka if pashupatastra or brahmasirhastra was used on karna!!

Karna also failed to stop Arjuna from killing Jayadratha(The person responsile for Abhimanyu’s killing)

Even Satyaki & Bheem gave sleepless nights to Karna!

Arjuna wasnt even seduced by queen of all Apsaras Urvashi whom even great rishis cant resist..Arjuna has an unmatched control of lust & respect for women which draupadi & krishna themselves praised! But what karna did-Karna encouraged cheer haran of draupadi & called draupadi A PROSTITUTE(VAISHYA)..God Krishna doesnt like anybody without any reason!!

Indeed Karna was the greatest human being that took birth on Earth & this was accpted by Lord Krisna himself & his daanvir nature & absolute loyality & friendship to Duryodhan was widely praised in three worlds & he also has to undergo great miseries & humiliation as “Suta Putra” & was denied his basic rights & motherly love & I am not doubting on his moral character indeed! But as far as arhery was concerned he was definietly a step behind Arjuna as Arjuna himself was NARA(Arjuna & Lord Krishna was called as NARA NARAYANA)..So nobody in three world could beat him..

So please stop unnecessarily criticising Arjuna everytime on public domain & stop giving sympathy votes to Karna!

    Jai Hind..
    satsriyakal..

    1. Perfect.
A minor clarification though; After reading carefully, I think, Karna forgot the use of some other celestial weapon.. maybe Bhargava astra. As you said, he uses Brahmastra even after forgetting the mantras.
Brahmastra doesn’t seem to be very elite in the mahabharata war; Yudhistra also used that against Drona (with due respects to Yudhistra)

Unfortunately a few people brand Mr.Ganguly’s work biased and totally made up. Just reading his text;- how low Yudhistra stooped to, when chastising Arjuna on the 17th day makes us realize how well he has truly translated without bias.

    2. Hey man…i admit that Dharma was always on pandavas. But when it comes into power. Karna was powerfull than Ajuna. Because Arjuna had the support from The supreme god Krishna and Hanuman. But Karna fought without the support of anyone but with his own ability. Eventhough Karna fought without his kavachakundal which no one can destroy, then also Arjuna was difficult to kill Karna. But in number of Divyastras Arjuna will win.

      1. Nara and Narayana had already destroyed 999 kavach of karna(born as Rakshasha) out of 1000 kavach he received from Surya in the previous incarnation. Karna ran away after that and took rebirth. Both Krishna and Arjuna knew how to break the kavach of Karna as they had successfully breached 999 of his 1000 kavach already as Nara and Narayana. But in doing so either of the one had to die as Suryadev had given a boon that one who breaks the divine kavach will die as soon as he breaks it. Hence the kavach was tactfully taken away.

& Finally karna himself accepting Arjuna’s supeority:

    Narrative:

“‘Karna said(about Arjuna), “As far as I have heard,
    such a superior car-warrior has
never been born on earth! Behold
my prowess, since I will contend in
battle with even that Partha who is
such. This prince of Kuru’s line, this
    foremost of car-warriors, careers in
battle, borne by his steeds white in
hue. Perhaps he will despatch me to
    Yama’s abode today. Know, however,
that with Karna’s death, these all
will be exterminated. The two arms
of this prince are never covered with
sweat. They never tremble. They are
    massive and covered with cicatrices.
Firm in the use of weapons, he is
possessed of great skill and endued
    with great lightness of hands.
Indeed, there is no warrior equal to
the son of Pandu. He taketh a large
number of arrows and shooteth them
as if they were one. Quickly fixing
    them on the bow-string, he
propelleth them to the distance of
two miles. They always fall on the
foe. What warriors is there on earth
that is equal to him? That Atiratha,
    endued with great activity, with
Krishna as his ally, gratified the god
Agni at Khandava. There, on that
    occasion, the high-souled Krishna
    obtained his discus, and Savyasaci,
the son of Pandu, obtained his bow
    Gandiva. There that mighty-armed
one, endued with might that knows
no decay, also obtained his terrible
car unto which are yoked those white
steeds, as also his two great
    celestial and inexhaustible quivers,
    and many celestial weapons, from
the God of Fire. In the region of
    Indra he obtained his conch
    Devadatta and slew innumerable
Daityas, and all the Kalakeyas. Who
is there on earth that is superior to
him? Possessed of greatness of soul,
he gratified Mahadeva himself in fair
fight, and obtained from him the
    terrible and mighty weapon Pasupata
that is capable of destroying the
three worlds. The several Regents of
the world, united together gave him
    their weapons of immeasurable
energy, with which that lion among
    men quickly destroyed in battle
    those united Asuras, the
    Kalakhanjas.

    So also, in Virata’s city,
moving on a single car he
vanquished all of us, and snatched
from us that wealth of kine, and took
from all the foremost of car-warriors
    (portions of) their garments.
    Challenging that foremost of
Kshatriyas, that hero having him of
Vrishni’s race for his ally, that
warrior who is endued with such
energy and such attributes, I regard
myself, O Shalya, to be the foremost
of persons in all the world in point
of courage. He is, again, protected by
that Keshava of great energy, who i
Narayana himself and who is without
    a rival, that high-souled Vasudeva,
    that ever-victorious Vishnu armed
with conch, discus, and mace, whose
    attributes all the world united
    together, cannot (in narrating)
    exhaust in 10,000 years. Beholding
the two Krishnas together on the
same car, fear entereth my heart
together with courage. Partha is the
    foremost of all bowmen!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kisari_Mohan_Ganguli

    1. Kisari Mohan Ganguli is a casteist bigot. His translations are biased. Abhimanyu is a PoS (and so were Arjun, Bheem, and Satyaki) and never frightened a domestic cat leave alone a great warrior like Karna.

      1. Obviously everyone including Mr.Ganguli knows that Karna was Kunti’s son and he was not actually a “suta”.
So, there is no caste factor in here; whether you support Arjuna or Karna, you are only siding with a Kshtriya (and during Yaksha Prashna, Yudhishtra says that caste is not based on birth, but by one’s actions)

sacred text has both sanskrit and english versions of the original mahabharata. And I happen to know a little bit of both. Mr.Ganguli’s work is a master piece and accurate.

  8. Above mentioned story is not cent percent correcr.I think the writer must go through class 12th hindi book of u.p board. There is a chapter in which it is clearly proved that karna was far better fighter than arjuna.According to that chapter when arjuna hitted a bow towards karna, karna chariot took four steps back while when karna did so arjuna chariot took only one step back. But krisha were praising karna.

Seeing this arjuna asked krishna that why are you praising karna.Krishna answered that your bows are stepping back the chariot of a nomal person karna where as bajrang bali himself is there on your chariot, the wheel of your chariot are grabbed by sheshnaag himself and me the lord with the weight of all three loks is sitting your chariot is stepped back by one step by karna.

    1. This incident has come out of imagination of some crook no such incident is mentioned in actual Mahabharata by Ved Vyas or its translations. So do not spread wrong information.

  9. The story wrtten above is not completely true. Bhima dint suck dusshasan’s blood. he took it n applied to draupadi’s hair as it was his vow. during war, karna defeated yudishter twice. when bhima came n fought to karna, karna made him faint n told him, I spare ur life, go n bring arjuna, its him I wish to kill.. and after karna’s wheel got stuck, krishna did insult him and at that time, karna told krishna that since d day karna was chief, he made sure dat d war ws fought wid rules.. to this krishna dint have answer, so he turned to arjun n told him that now by killing karna, he is not breaking any rule as karna has wheel(iron) in his hand, so he is not nishastra n if arjun had to kill him, this was the only moment. this was heard by karna n then he knew why it happened.. he juz smiled at krishna n accepted the deadly arow frm arjun vich pierced his throat.. while karna was dying, suryadev came as an old man n asked karna for daan as he had lost his son in battle.. karna den asked his son, to take a stone n break karna’s teeth as dey wr of gold n he donated dm to suryadev.. later karna signaled krishna to come close n asked a last wish.. his last wish ws krishna to perform krna’s last rites on a kumari bhoomi (where no life has born n vl never be born ever) as he wanted no life to suffer what he suffered. moreover, during duel, arjun’s arrows moved karna’s chariot bt 10yards n karna arrows moved arjuns chariot by 2yards for vich Krishna praised karna. frustrated arjun asked krishna y he is not praising him since hez arrows are more effective.. to vich krishna replied “raja, I am sitting on ur chariot, vich means entire brhmand is sitting here, if I hadnt been here, u wud have gone to an infinite point in universe..

    1. karna is the only human whoz last rites (antyasanskar) wer done by god (krishna himself)… for more info read shivaji sawant’s mrityunjai

      1. Please read Mahabhrata of Ved Vyas, the original source Mahabharata epic. Shivaji Sawant’s Mrityunjay or Ramanand Sagar’s Sri Krishna serial wont give you the right information.

        1. Are you claiming you have read the original? All you have is a translation by some casteist bigots. So-called upper caste idiots have always been placing Arjun on a pedestal and insulting Karna. But, fortunately, their words are not the final.

    2. The above narration is itself full of mistakes. Wheh Abhimanyu was killed unjustly, Karn was the party of that coward act. He was not able to counter Abhimanyu singlehandedly, actually he was defeated by Abhimanyu on the battlefield so he supported Drona for all mischeavous acts. If Karn was so powerful why he couldnot defeat in Virat Yudhha ? Actually karn deserved the treatment he was met.

  10. This is the most interesting part of the entire epic, a wonderful face off between the greatest warriors of all times. Irrespective of who has won the war, both of them have won immortal glory.

  11. Here I am posting a passage from Udyog Parva that shows how much Dhritarastra was scared of Bhima’s prowess. Although the language is ornamental as usual, but this passage is worth reading.

….”Dhritarashtra said, ‘All these named by thee are, indeed, endued with great courage, but all of them together are equal to Bhima singly. My fear, O child, from the wrathful Bhima is, indeed, very great, like that of fat deer from an enraged tiger. I pass all my nights in sleeplessness, breathing deep and hot sighs afraid of Vrikodara, O child, like an animal of any other species afraid of the lion. Of mighty arms, and in energy equal unto Sakra himself, I see not in this whole army even one that can withstand him in battle. Exceedingly wrathful and determined in animosity, that son of Kunti and Pandu smileth not even in jest, is mad with rage, casteth his glances obliquely, and speaketh in a voice of thunder. Of great impetuosity and great courage, of long arms and great might, he will not, in battle, leave even one of my foolish sons alive. Indeed, Vrikodara, that bull among the Kurus, whirling his mace in battle, will, like a second Yama mace in hand slay all my sons who are afflicted by a heavy calamity. Even now I see that terrible mace of his, with eight sides made of steel, and adorned with gold, uplifted like a Brahmana’s curse. As a lion of mighty strength among a flock of deer, Bhima will range among my troops. He only (amongst his brothers) always displayed his strength cruelly towards my sons. Eating voraciously, and endued with great impetuosity, from his very childhood he hath been behaving inimically towards my children. My heart trembleth (to remember) that even in their childhood, Duryodhana and other sons of mine, while fighting with him (sportively) were always ground down by the elephant-like Bhima. Alas, my sons have always been oppressed by his might, and it is that Bhima of terrible prowess that hath been the cause of this rupture. Even now I behold Bhima, mad with rage, fighting in the very van, and devouring the whole of my host consisting of men, elephants, and steeds. Equal unto Drona and Arjuna in weapons, his speed equal unto the velocity of the wind, and in wrath like unto Maheswara himself, who is there, O Sanjaya, that would slay that wrathful and terrible hero in battle? I think it to be a great gain that my sons were not even then slain by that slayer of enemies who is endued with such energy. How can a human being withstand the impetuosity of that warrior in battle who slew Yakshas and Rakshasas of terrible might before? O Sanjaya, even in his childhood he was never completely under my control. Injured by my wicked sons, how can that son of Pandu come under my control now? Cruel and extremely wrathful, he would break but not bend. Of oblique glances and contracted eye-brows, how can he be induced to remain quiet? Endued with heroism, of incomparable might and fair complexion, tall like a palmyra tree, and in height taller than Arjuna by the span of the thumb, the second son of Pandu surpasseth the very steeds in swiftness, and elephants in strength, speaketh in indistinct accents, and possesseth eyes having the hue of honey.

    1. Please read Mahabharat completely. Karna never defeated Arjun even once in his entire life, but Arjun did it many number of times in Virata Parvam and Karna Parvam. Karna couldnt chase Matsya Yantra and Karna was thouroughly defeated by Gandarvas in Ghosha Yatra, whom Arjun defeated single handedly. Arjuna was the best

      1. Totally agree with you Ram….. You can also join the discussion at the other part of this blog named as “Greatest warrior of all time”…..

      2. Oh i think you know nothing in virat parvam karna had his kavach and kundalam he just ran away because he had respect for lord brahma because arjun was trying to use his brhamstra. And when vasuki trying to rape draupadi karna saved her and arjun requested to karna for doing so. Just remember one thing if lord krishna was not there pandavs could never win that battle. And karna is far better than arjun

        1. All his life, Karna fought against discrimination, misfortune and yet had the character to stick to his word in all circumstances. Even before he went under the tutelage of Lord Parshurama, Karna was better than Arjuna. No weapon in the whole world had the prowess to pierce Karna’s kavach. Pandavas and that jackass Indra had to stoop to the lowest of lows to kill Karna.

To cut the long story short, Arjuna wasn’t fit to tie Karna’s shoelaces!

      3. Arjuna was the best in using words to win and getting jealous of everyone else. He was an a$$. You can keep your biased translations to yourself, you so-called upper caste fool. Karna was better than Arjun, his dad, children, and brothers put together.

        1. Karna was born wid khatriya genes by birth which cudn’t be suppressed…why divide an epic on d basis of caste. ..few days later we will question who was Hindu and Muslim. ..I am sry bt lets cherish and not fight

  12. I think that there is some interpolation by narrators of latter days in Mahabharata in description of the final encounter between Karna and Arjuna. Both fought excellently that day. But it does not make a sense that instead of trying to kill Arjuna, Karna would have decided to extract the the wheel of his chariot when he with his arrow made Arjuna swoon. Why would Karna waste that opportunity ? He could have extract wheels after killing Arjuna. Why couldn’t he show that mercy in his encounter with Abhimanyu, who was a child for him ? Karna must have fought fiercely at the time of final war. But it seems that this encounter between Arjuna and Karna has been exaggerated in later days just to praise Karna. If Karna was so vigorous why did he lost against Abhimany, Bhima, Satyaki and Arjuna on previous occasions ? Why couldn’t he save Jaydratha Duhshasan and Vrishsena ? Why he waited for the death of his son to exhibit his prowess ?

    1. Hmmm,, in my opinion, I think because he (Karna) know that Kunti love Arjuna more than she love him. If Kunti love Karna, she won’t abandoned him three time.
      1. When he was born
      2. At the tournament
      3. Near the war, she ask a life for her 5 sons (not 6 or 4, but 5)
Poor Karna (˘̩̩̩___˘̩̩̩) Arjuna n Pandava may win the war, but Karna win my symphaty n my heart.
That the reason why he don’t kill Arjuna. Because everybody love Arjuna. His mother, his brothers, his wife (Draupadi n Subadra) n Lord Khrisna. Everybody will crying for Arjuna if he died.
But who loved Karna??? ME ;D

      1. S I too agree with u…. I too love karna… he might hv lost the battle, but he won many peoples hearts.. Karna is a great warrior

    2. “One Moment In Time” by Whitney Houston

      Each day I live
      I want to be
      A day to give
      The best of me
      I’m only one
      But not alone
      My finest day
      Is yet unknown

      I broke my heart
      Fought every gain
      To taste the sweet
      I face the pain
      I rise and fall
      Yet through it all
      This much remains

I want one moment in time
When I’m more than I thought I could be
When all of my dreams are a heartbeat away
And the answers are all up to me
Give me one moment in time
      When I’m racing with destiny
Then in that one moment of time
      I will feel
      I will feel eternity

      I’ve lived to be
      The very best
      I want it all
      No time for less
      I’ve laid the plans
      Now lay the chance
      Here in my hands

Give me one moment in time
When I’m more than I thought I could be
When all of my dreams are a heartbeat away
And the answers are all up to me
Give me one moment in time
      When I’m racing with destiny
Then in that one moment of time
      I will feel
      I will feel eternity

      You’re a winner for a lifetime
If you seize that one moment in time
      Make it shine

Give me one moment in time
When I’m more than I thought I could be
When all of my dreams are a heartbeat away
And the answers are all up to me
Give me one moment in time
      When I’m racing with destiny
Then in that one moment of time
      I will be
      I will be
      I will be free
      I will be
      I will be free

OMG, I really love this song. Her voice so amazing. And when I heard this song, I always think about Karnas life. ( ˘ з˘)~♡

      And also this song
      “My Way” by Frank Sinatra

And now, the end is near,
And so I face the final curtain.
      My friends, I’ll say it clear;
I’ll state my case of which I’m certain.

      I’ve lived a life that’s full –
I’ve traveled each and every highway.
And more, much more than this,
      I did it my way.

      Regrets? I’ve had a few,
But then again, too few to mention.
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption.

I planned each charted course –
Each careful step along the byway,
And more, much more than this,
      I did it my way.

Yes, there were times, I’m sure you knew,
When I bit off more than I could chew,
But through it all, when there was doubt,
I ate it up and spit it out.
I faced it all and I stood tall
      And did it my way.

I’ve loved, I’ve laughed and cried,
I’ve had my fill – my share of losing.
      But now, as tears subside,
I find it all so amusing.

To think I did all that,
And may I say, not in a shy way –
Oh no. Oh no, not me.
      I did it my way.

For what is a man? What has he got?
If not himself – Then he has naught.
To say the things he truly feels
And not the words of one who kneels.
The record shows I took the blows
      And did it my way.

      Yes, it was my way.

He really won my heart ( ˘)з┌◦◦◦♥

    3. As I know, after the murderer of Abhimanyu, Arjuna vow to kill Jayadhrata before sun set next day and if he fail he commit to suicide.
In that day, Duryudhana hide Jayadratha in their save house. That house guide by Karna, Drona (Chief Commander), Duryudhana, etc. So, it’s hardly to Arjuna to kill Jayadhrata. Until afternoon, there is no result.
So, Lord Krishna help him (Again). With his great power, Lord Krishna hide the sun. All the Kaurava armies fell happy n celebrating. They want to see Arjuna keep his vow n suicide. Jayadhrata want to see that moment too. He came out from the save house without his guard (or his guard -include Karna n Drona- was careless because they think the sun start sink in the west and the war is over for that day). And Arjuna kill Jayadhrata.
After Arjuna kill Jayadhrata, the sun shine again. And all Kaurava fell so sad with the dead of Jayadhrata.
So, Arjuna kill Jayadhrata WITH the HELP of Lord Krishna who HIDE the SUN. In my opinion, it don’t prove Arjuna upper-hand Karna n Drona. May I say, it’s a cheat??? (or strategy of war, it depend on your point of view). If Arjuna greatest warrior, he can kill Jayadhrata easily since early morning without any help from other.

        1. what the fuck ram,KRISHNA is the main creator for the doom of MAHABHARAT.why he had shown mercy only to ARJUN and why not to KARNA.why god like INDRA,PASURAM cheated him?even other brahmins cursed him but LORD KRISHNA knew all and let happen.surely ARJUN is a timid,a puppet in the hands of mighty KARNA

          1. Krishna and Shive, the lord of the universe were on Arjuna’s side, because Karna was on the side of adharma.

He was the accomplice of Duryodhana when he tried to burn down the pandavas (along with Kunti).
[This is so surprising and I don't want to believe this, that Karna didn't object to this]

Karna ordered the disrobing of Panchali (and not Duryodhana)
Karna was also the accomplice of Duryodhan when he tries to capture Krishna during the Krishna’s visit to Hastinapur.

All these from the original sanskrit version of mahabharat by Ved Vyasa.

    4. At time of Abhimanyu killing Drona was in charge. But at time of Karna-Arjuna war Karna himself was in-charge so he decided not to kill Arjuna in that way. That would have defeated sole goal. And for you that was a great opportunity or in eyes of pandavs and Krishna is was a great opportunity but in eyes of Karna that was not right.

Bhisma and Karna both fought with honor. Same cant be said for others.

And engaging in a dual was not allowed as per rules so thats why he didn’t engaged in those fights.

  13. (-̩̩̩-̩̩̩-̩̩̩-̩̩̩__-̩̩̩-̩̩̩-̩̩̩-̩̩̩)

Daana Veera Soora Radheya Karna finally passed away.. I feel so sad…

  14. Jai Shri Krishna. I think above extract is from K. M Ganguly. It shows that Arjuna and Karna both came up with brilliant performances. But the observaton I have made in 3 versions ie Ganguly, C .Rajagopalachari and R.C Dutt whom under Shri Rabindranath Tagore worked is that When Karna appealed to Arjuna to allow him to extract his chariot wheel both Krishna and Arjuna made it clear that they will kill him by hook or by crook. Karna immediatly fought back and rendered ARjuna senseless and then continued to struggle with his chariot wheel. Friends see the greatness of Karna. Despite both Arjuna and Krishna making it clear to him that they will attack him even unfairly he respected the rule of fair battle and did NOT attack the unconcious Arjuna and choose to extract his wheel instead. Below I have quoted Gangulys extract which shows that Arjuna too made Karna faint but continued to attack him when he was unconsious. Let mem quote unquote
“Once more Arjuna pierced Karna in the centre of the chest with many straight-coursing and strong shafts made entirely of iron and equipped with wings of gold and each resembling the fiery rod of the Destroyer, like the son of Agni piercing the Krauncha mountains. Then the Suta’s son, casting aside his bow that resembled the very bow of Sakra, as also his quiver, felt great pain, and stood inactive, stupefied, and reeling, his grasp loosened and himself in great anguish. The virtuous Arjuna, observant of the duty of manliness, wished not to slay his enemy while fallen into such distress. The younger brother of Indra then, with great excitement, addressed him, saying, “Why, O son of Pandu, dost thou become so forgetful? They that are truly wise never spare their foes, however weak, even for a moment. The Suta’s son, when able, will once more advance against thee as before. Slay him, therefore, like Indra slaying the Asura Namuci.” Saying, “So be it, O Krishna!” Arjuna, that foremost of all persons in Kuru’s race once more quickly pierced Karna with many excellent arrows. Adhiratha’s son of broad chest looked resplendent like an Asoka or Palasa or Salmali decked with its flowery load or a mountain overgrown with a forest of sandal trees. Karna also shooting repeated showers of arrows, looked, with those arrows Recovering his coolness, and shooting many shafts that resembled angry snakes, Karna then pierced Partha with ten shafts and Krishna with half a dozen, each of which looked like an angry snake. Then Dhananjaya desired to shoot a mighty and terrible arrow At that time, when the hour of Karna’s death had come, Kala, approaching invisibly, and alluding to the Brahmana’s curse, and desirous of informing Karna that his death was near, told him, “The Earth is devouring thy wheel!” Karna became filled with melancholy. He then pierced Krishna in the arm with three terrible arrows, and Partha, too, with seven. Then Arjuna sped seven and ten terrible arrows, perfectly straight and of fierce impetuosity, resembling fire in splendour and like unto Indra’s thunder in force. Endued with awful impetuosity, those arrows pierced Karna and passing out of his body fell upon the surface of the earth. Trembling at the shock, Karna then displayed his activity to the utmost of his power. Steadying himself by a powerful effort he invoked the brahmastra. Beholding the brahmastra, Arjuna invoked the Aindra weapon with proper mantras. The mighty car-warrior Karna baffled all those shafts displayed in his front. The son of Radha baffled with his own weapons those of Savyasaci. Displaying also his own prowess, he seemed to get the better of Dhananjaya at that time. At that time, O king, the earth swallowed up one of wheels of Karna’s car. Quickly alighting then from his vehicle, he seized his sunken wheel with his two arms and endeavoured to lift it up with a great effort. . Seeing his wheel swallowed, the son of Radha shed tears from wrath, and beholding Arjuna, filled with rage he said these words, “O Partha, O Partha, wait for a moment, that is, till I lift this sunken wheel. Brave warriors that are observant of the practices of the righteous, never shoot their weapons at persons with dishevelled hair, or at those that have turned their faces from battle, Thou art the bravest of men in the world. Thou art also of righteous behaviour, O son of Pandu! Thou art well-acquainted with the rules of battle. For these reasons, excuse me for a moment, that is, till I extricate my wheel, ‘Then Vasudeva, stationed on the car, addressed Karna, saying, “By good luck it is, O son of Radha, that thou rememberest virtue! It is generally seen that they that are mean, when they sink into distress, rail at Providence but never at their own misdeeds. Thyself and Suyodhana and Duhshasana and Shakuni, the son of Subala, had caused Draupadi, clad in a single piece of raiment, to be brought into the midst of the assembly. On that occasion, O Karna, this virtue of thine did not manifest itself. Then Vasudeva, addressing Phalguna, that bull among men, said, “O thou of great might, piercing Karna with a celestial weapon, throw him down.” Thus addressed by the holy one, Arjuna became filled with rage. Indeed, remembering the incidents alluded to by Krishna, Dhananjaya blazed up with fury. Then, O king, blazing flames of fire seemed to emanate from all the pores of the angry Partha’s body. The sight seemed to be exceedingly wonderful. Beholding it, Karna, invoking the brahmastra, showered his shafts upon Dhananjaya, and once more made an effort to extricate his car. Partha also, by the aid of the brahmastra, poured arrowy downpours upon Karna. The Suta’s son then, for slaying the son of Pandu, took up a terrible arrow blazing like fire. When that adored shaft was fixed on the bow-string, the earth, O king, trembled with her mountains and waters and forests. Violent winds began to blow, bearing hard pebbles. All the points of the compass became enveloped with dust. Wails of grief, O Bharata, arose among the gods in the welkin. Beholding that shaft aimed by the Suta’s son, O sire, the Pandavas, with cheerless hearts, gave themselves up to great sorrow. That shaft of keen point and endued with the effulgence of Sakra’s thunder, sped from Karna’s arms, fell upon Dhananjaya’s chest and penetrated it like a mighty snake penetrating an ant-hill. That grinder of foes, viz., the high-souled Vibhatsu, thus deeply pierced in that encounter, began to reel. His grasp became loosened, at which his bow Gandiva dropped from his hand. He trembled like the prince of mountains in an earthquake. ( here its clearly evident Arjuna has fainted ) Availing himself of that opportunity, the mighty car-warrior Vrisha, desirous of extricating his car-wheel that had been swallowed up by the earth, jumped down from his vehicle. Seizing the wheel with his two arms he endeavoured to drag it up, but though possessed of great strength, he failed in his efforts, as destiny would have it. Meanwhile the diadem-decked and high-souled Arjuna, recovering his senses, ( here its mentioned Arjuna recovered his sense )took up a shaft, fatal as the rod of Death, and called anjalika. Then Vasudeva, addressing Partha, said, “Cut off with thy arrow the head of this enemy of thine, viz., Vrisha, before he succeeds in getting upon his car.” Applauding those words of the lord Vasudeva, and while the wheel of his enemy was still sunk, the mighty car-warrior Arjuna took up a razor-headed arrow of blazing effulgence and struck the standard (of Karna) bearing the elephant’s rope and bright as the spotless sun. That standard bearing the device of the costly elephant’s rope, was adorned with gold and pearls and gems and diamonds, and forged with care by foremost of artists excelling in knowledge, and possessed of great beauty, and variegated with pure gold. That standard always used to fill thy troops with high courage and the enemy with fear. Its form commanded applause. Celebrated over the whole world, it resembled the sun in splendour. Indeed, its effulgence was like that of fire or the sun or the moon. The diadem-decked Arjuna, with that razor-headed shaft, exceedingly sharp, equipped with wings of gold, possessed of the splendour of fire when fed with libations of clarified butter, and blazing with beauty, cut off that standard of Adhiratha’s son, that great car-warrior. With that standard, as it fell, the fame, pride, hope of victory, and everything dear, as also the hearts of the Kurus, fell, and loud wails of “Oh!” and “Alas!” arose (from the Kuru army). Beholding that standard cut off and thrown down by that hero of Kuru’s race possessed of great lightness of hand, thy troops, O Bharata, were no longer hopeful of Karna’s victory. Hastening then for Karna’s destruction, Partha took out from his quiver an excellent Anjalika weapon that resembled the thunder of Indra or the rod of fire and that was possessed of the effulgence of the thousand-rayed Sun. Capable of penetrating the very vitals, besmeared with blood and flesh, resembling fire or the sun, made of costly materials, destructive of men, steeds, and elephants, of straig
ht course and fierce impetuosity, it measured three cubits and six feet. Endued with the force of the thousand-eyed Indra’s thunder, irresistible as Rakshasas in the night, resembling Pinaka or Narayana’s discus, it was exceedingly terrible and destructive of all living creatures. Partha cheerfully took up that great weapon, in the shape of an arrow, which could not be resisted by the very gods, that high-souled being which was always adored by the son of Pandu, and which was capable of vanquishing the very gods and the Asuras. Beholding that shaft grasped by Partha in that battle, the entire universe shook with its mobile and immobile creatures. Indeed, seeing that weapon raised (for being sped) in that dreadful battle, the Rishis loudly cried out, “Peace be to the universe!” The wielder of Gandiva then fixed on his bow that unrivalled arrow, uniting it with a high and mighty weapon. Drawing his bow Gandiva, he quickly said, “Let this shaft of mine be like a mighty weapon capable of quickly destroying the body and heart of my enemy, if I have ever practised ascetic austerities, gratified my superiors, and listened to the counsels of well-wishers. Let this shaft, worshipped by me and possessed of great sharpness, slay my enemy Karna by that Truth.” Having said these words Dhananjaya let off that terrible shaft for the destruction of Karna, that arrow fierce and efficacious as a rite prescribed in the Atharvan of Angiras, blazing with effulgence, and incapable of being endured by Death himself in battle. And the diadem-decked Partha, desirous of slaying Karna, with great cheerfulness, said, “Let this shaft conduce to my victory. Shot by me, let this arrow possessed of the splendour of fire or the sun take Karna to the presence of Yama.” Saying these words, Arjuna, decked with diadem and garlands, cherishing feelings of hostility towards Karna and desirous of slaying him, cheerfully struck his foe with that foremost of shafts which was possessed of the splendour of the sun or the moon and capable of bestowing victory. Thus sped by that mighty warrior, that shaft endued with the energy of the sun caused all the points of the compass to blaze up with light. With that weapon Arjuna struck off his enemy’s head like Indra striking off the head of Vritra with his thunder. Indeed, O king, with that excellent Anjalika weapon inspired with mantras into a mighty weapon, the son of Indra cut off the head of Vaikartana in the afternoon. Thus cut off with that Anjalika, the trunk of Karna fell down on the earth.”

    1. No doubt that Karna was a brilliant archer. But Karna was defeated by Arjuna at all previous occasions. Even on the day of final encounter, Arjuna killed his son Vrishsena in front of him. Karna could not save him. It enraged Karna and he became furious. He went for an all out war with Arjuna. Arjuna started striking mildly. As he had defeated Karna before, he thought that he can easily kill karna. But enraged with the death of his son Karna was a different Karna today. Both neutralized each others arrows. Karna made Arjuna’s bow to fall from his hand, but Krishna urged Arjuna to hit Karna with high astras. Krishna told him to slay karna using Krishna’s weapon . Arjuna used higher weapons, but he did not use Pashupatyastra or Vaishnavastra on Karna. On the other hand Karna used all the best weapons in his possession – Bhargavastra, Brahmastra and Nagastra. Arjuna neutralized all his weapon except Nagastra. Arjuna could have neutralized this weapon as well with the higher weapons that he had, but he did not do that and Krishna had to press the chariot down to save him. First time in his entire career Arjuna faltered. But as Arjuna was “ajeya”, it was destined that he will never loss. We can not say that Arjuna was inferior to Karna on the basis of the single mistake that he did.

        1. Mr.Thozar, I see that you keep disparaging Kesari Mohan Ganguly. Just curious, which version of mahabharata do you believe in ? Why don’t you post some evidence from there to prove otherwise.

  15. Dear Aniket,
